آن که محبت نمی‌کند، خدا را نشناخته است، زیرا خدا محبت است. محبت خدا این‌چنین در میان ما آشکار شد که خدا پسر یگانۀ خود را به جهان فرستاد تا به
واسطۀ او حیات داشته باشیم. محبت همین است، نه آنکه ما خدا را محبت کردیم، بلکه او ما را محبت کرد و پسر خود را فرستاد تا کفّارۀ گناهان ما باشد. ای عزیزان، اگر خدا ما را این‌چنین محبت کرد، ما نیز باید یکدیگر را محبت کنیم. هیچ‌کس هرگز خدا را ندیده است؛ امّا اگر یکدیگر را محبت کنیم، خدا در ما ساکن است و محبت او در ما به کمال رسیده است.

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
